Freedom has been around forever.
It's the app everyone recommends when you ask "how do I block distractions?" And for good reason — it works.
But I switched to Deep Focus. Here's why.
Cross-platform blocking.
Freedom blocks websites and apps on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. If you need phone blocking, Freedom is one of the best options.
Scheduled sessions.
You can schedule recurring blocks. Set it once, and Freedom runs automatically.
Locked mode.
Once you start a session, you can't stop it early (unless you restart your computer). This is great if you need forced accountability.
No session planning.
Freedom blocks things. But it doesn't help you plan your day. You can't build a sequence of focus and break blocks. You just set a timer and go.
No ambient sounds.
If you want background noise, you need a separate app or browser tab (which defeats the purpose of blocking your browser).
No analytics.
Freedom doesn't show you focus heatmaps, distraction tracking, or session history. It just blocks and unblocks.
Expensive.
$40/year for the full version. Not terrible, but not cheap.
Session Planner.
You can build entire routines — 90 min focus, 15 min break, 60 min focus, 20 min break. Drag and drop. Auto-advance. Undo/redo. Freedom doesn't have this.
Weekly Scheduler.
Set recurring blocks by day and time. Deep Focus auto-activates the right profile at the right time. Freedom has scheduling, but it's less flexible.
Ambient sounds.
10 built-in soundscapes (Forest, Rain, Coffee Shop, White Noise, etc.). No browser tab required. No streaming. Just native audio.
Analytics.
Focus heatmap. Distraction tracking. Session history. You can see patterns and adjust your schedule based on data.
System restrictions.
Deep Focus can block Task Manager, Terminal, and System Settings so you can't cheat your way out. Freedom doesn't do this.

Mobile blocking.
Deep Focus doesn't have a mobile app yet. If you need to block your phone, Freedom is the better choice.
Locked mode.
Freedom's locked mode is more aggressive. Once you start, you can't stop. Deep Focus lets you pause (which is good for flexibility but bad for accountability).
If you need mobile blocking, use Freedom.
If you need session planning, analytics, and ambient sounds, use Deep Focus.
If you need both, use Deep Focus on desktop and Freedom on mobile (yes, you can use both).
Freedom is a blocker. Deep Focus is a focus system. Choose based on what you need.
